Your child has been complaining of headaches and it’s been going on for a while. Headaches can be a a symptom of pain in the area of the head or neck and are common in children and adolescents.
There are many reasons as to why your kid is suffering from headaches. Some reasons include; colds, stress, dehydration, lack of sleep, eye problems or could be caused by tension within the head and neck areas. Most headaches in kids are not due to a serious underlying problem, but it can cause unease and can heavily impact schooling, sports and hobbies if not treated effectively.
What causes headaches?
Did you know adolescents who experience headaches often have other family members who get them regularly too? Common triggers for headaches in children with migraine or tension headaches can also be a cause of not getting enough sleep or being stressed. In rare cases, exercise can also trigger headaches, but mainly stem from a source of dehydration. Viral infections such as colds, sinusitis, or ear infections can all also be a cause of headaches.
Signs and symptoms of different headaches
Children are affected by many different types of headaches and they can range in severity from a mild ache to severe pain. Some common headaches and their symptoms include:
- Tension headache – feels like a tight band around the head. A tension headache is usually a dull, steady ache felt on both sides of the head, but may be felt at the front and back of the head.
- Migraine headaches – often described as a throbbing feeling, which may be on one side of the head. Migraines are sometimes accompanied by symptoms of dizziness, nausea, vomiting and visual obscurities.
It’s important to stay on top of your child’s health and regularly occurring headaches may be a cause of an underlying issue which may run deeper.
